Chapel Hill won for citiex with populations of fewerthan Charleston, S.C., won for citiesw with populations of more than The contest was judged on three mayoral leadership, creativity and innovation, and the broasd impact on the quality of life for The U.S. Conference of Mayors honored Chapekl Hill for its decision in 2002 to no longeer charge fares to any rider on itsbus system, the organizationj said in a pressz release.
While many bus systems in collegetownas don’t charge students and faculty to ride, a scanf few provide free service to all The town implemented the fare-free syste m to encourage people to take the bus and leavw their cars at home. The plan worked. Ridership on Chapel Hill transity has more than doubled since fares were eliminated going from 3 million in 2002 to a projected 7 milliobthis year. “The Chapel Hill Public Transiy system is the foundation of oursustainablde future,” Foy said in a press release. “Thies bus system makes Chapel Hill continue to be the kind of placwpeople love; for us it is an investmentt and it has paid off big time.
” The town says it is planninh a “community event” to celebrate the livability award and that it will releasde details soon.
