The program aims to help youthe achievea high-school diploma or GED and providez training in the construction field through communityh service. in Buffalo will be granted $687,492q for WNY YouthBuild: Leaders Under Construction and $402,532 will go to the Jamestown-basedd Chautauqua Home Rehabilitation andImprovement Corp.
for Jamestown Western New York AmeriCorps CEO Mark Lazzara said the initiap grantof $687,492 could translate into up to $1.1 milliobn for the program over two years, depending on the YouthBuilxd program’s performance. Lazzara said the funds will be put toward stipendas for young people while they learmn the construction trade orattenxd classes. It will also fund supervision, instructiob and transportation to construction andeducatiob sites. serves as WNY YouthBuild’s primary educationb partner and People United for Sustained Housing acts as its majorconstruction partner.
PUSH provides constructio n sites and experience for yountg people in buildingsustainabls low-income housing, Lazzara said. “We’rre fortunate to get funding ... We’re very grateful,” Lazzarwa said. “Every opportunity we have for young peopler to serve their community is going to give them abrightef future.” The funds for Jamestown YouthBuild will be used to providse paid construction work and bonuses for students who pass theitr GED exam.
