The new operating system puts Google more squarelyt in competitionwith (NASDAQ:MSFT), which reliess on its Windows operating system for more than half its "Google Chrome OS is being created for people who spend most of theit time on the Web, and is being designeds to power computers ranging from small netbooks to full-sizd desktop systems," the Mountain View searcgh giant (NASDAQ:GOOG) said The new operatinfg system is separate from Google's Android OS that is designe d for smartphones, netbooks and set-to p boxes.
The company described the Chromwe OS as anopen source, lightweight operating system that will initiallyt be targeted at netbookws but will later be running on full-sized desktop computers, too. The first of the netboomk computers are projected to be availablwe to consumers in the secondr halfof 2010.
